New Microphones

Above: One of our new microphones!

IRIS has two new microphones. They are PG 42 Shure side address microphones installed in the control room and studio. Some time back, two of our microphones died at about the same time, and were too old to repair. We limped along with a spare and a loaner, but it was time for two new ones. Thanks to Dick Trump for the recommendation and installation.

2009 Ice Cream Social

Twenty years is a long time. That's how long IRIS and its volunteers have provided reading services to the blind and print handicapped of Iowa. Volunteers, listeners, board members, folks from the Iowa Department for the Blind and political leaders - more than 80 in number - joined together August 27th at AIB College of Business to celebrate, and enjoy ice cream and goodies.

Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell congratulated the organization for its volunteer work, and Jule Reynolds, disabilities coordinator from the office of Senator Tom Harkin read greetings from the Senator. The Director of the Iowa Department for the Blind, Karen Keninger also joined in the festivities, along with a delegation of students from the Department's Orientation Center.
Residents from Wesley Acres came, as several listeners sought out their favorite readers.

This year's winners of the fabulous engraved IRIS flower vase for meritorious service are:

-Darlene Eischeid accepted the vase for her late husband
Jerry, a long time volunteer.
-Eileen Bowerman
-Dave Saurman
-Steve Eckhardt
-John Thompson
-Linda Lundgren

Thanks to all those who helped make the Ice Cream Social
possible - looking forward to next year!

"Touch the Art" at IDB

Last Friday, July 10, the Iowa Department for the Blind invited the community to an event called "Touch the Art."

Here are some photos from snapped by IRIS director Rob Davis, with captions supplemented by news releases from the Iowa Department for the Blind:

Renowned tactile artist Ann Cunningham of Denver, Colorado, unveiled her public art exhibit. The exhibit features seven 3-D pieces installed throughout the Department's Des Moines office. In this photo, Cunningham and a blind community member touch the tactile representation of Grant Wood's "American Gothic", made from slate, bronze, and cherry wood.

Visitors touch the "Regionalist Landscape," which is a tactile representation of farm fields. This mixed-media piece uses bronze, slate, and cherry wood to depict a country road replete with a farm house, barn, large poplar tree, and child using a cane and leading a piglet on a rope.

"Most art is of the 'don't touch' nature," said Colleen Armstrong, Iowa Arts Council board member. "But this artwork is meant to be touched and interpreted. It represents how the Iowa Department for the Blind gets in touch with the blind and visually impaired, with their families, with employers."

Artist Ann Cunningham, pictured at the podium, has been sculpting for more than 30 ears. Her accessible fairy tales have been seen by over 150,000 people. Her work is in many public and private collections, including the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Outdoor Arts, Englewood, Colorado, and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind.

Karen Keninger, Iowa Department for the Blind director, also announced that the Department will expand its field staff-- phasing in new counselors and teachers over the next three months to better serve all areas of Iowa. In addition, the Department unveiled a new logo, which emphasizes the lower case "i." Keninger says, "We believe the new logo and tagline exemplifies the mission of the Iowa Department for the Blind, which is to create opportunities for independence for all blind and visually impaired Iowans." State Senator Staci Appel (D-Warren) is pictured above with Keninger.

The Des Moines Register's Mark Hansen covered the story in Saturday's paper. Check it out at the Register's website:

Greetings from an Old Friend!

It's been more than a year since our friend Marilyn Von Ahsen left IRIS to move to the St. Louis area with her husband. She sent us a note with a photo to say hello. If you would like her email address, call the IRIS office and we will put you in touch.

Marilyn says:

Hello from Missouri! I still check the website, and look at the calendar and sometimes listen, so readers I am still watching you! and miss you all very much.

Hard to believe we have been here a year already. I am not working now, along with a lot of other folks around here who really wish they were, so decided to take your fine example and volunteer. I am helping out in the hospice office here in town.

Our kids visit pretty often, and Nathan and Jenna's four day wedding spectacular in May was a great family reunion in Omaha. Barry & Kim got down last month for a Cardinals game - we all agree, fans or not, watching Albert Pujols bat is great! Last weekend we took the grandsons to Grants Farm to see the animals which was a lot of fun. They are fun no matter what we do of course - Keegan just had his fourth birthday and Johann is six months. And a couple of characters let me tell you! They amuse each other greatly, and their grandma.

Keep in touch, and keep up the great work there at IRIS!

Marilyn

Sioux City IRIS Update

KWIT General Manager Gretchen Gondek reports it is possible KWIT will be operating at full power again as early as Friday. IRIS volunteers in Sioux City are on alert to possibly report to work Friday morning. IRIS volunteers read The Journal at 8am each day. As you know, damage to a transmission line forced the station to operate at greatly reduced power for the past several weeks and that put IRIS out of business for the duration. Let's keep our fingers crossed !

IRIS in Mason City

IRIS volunteers in Mason City said goodbye at a coffee June 9 to volunteer coordinator Jane Ginapp, although she is not going very far! Jane has served as volunteer coordinator for more than 3 years, and in addition to scheduling volunteers, has worked on IRIS outreach and public relations, putting out a newsletter and scheduling many volunteer get togethers. Lisa Janzer Mott will take over the IRIS scheduling duties, but Jane will continue to read for IRIS in Mason City.

Mason City IRIS volunteers Marv Murphy, Ralph Cassady, Jane Ginapp, Lisa Janzer Mott , Barb Wendt, Kay Faulken were among the IRIS readers at a coffee June 9 at KCMR Radio.

Outgoing Mason City volunteer coordinator Jane Ginapp receives a coveted IRIS vase from Director Rob Davis as a "thank you'' for her work on behalf of IRIS.

KCMR Manager Bill Schickel shares a laugh with IRIS volunteers at a training session and coffee June 9 at the radio station.

Sioux City IRIS

Rob here. I know our Sioux City IRIS listeners are anxiously awaiting the return of our service in Siouxland. The General Manager of KWIT, Gretchen Gondek, reports work is underway to repair a damaged transmission line which has forced the station to operate at very low power, for an extended period of time. Hopefully, everything will be back to normal by the end of the month. Thank you for your patience !

Welcome !

Welcome to the IRIS blog. We will be posting items and photos here from time to time. Please check our blog regularly, and feel free to leave any comments. - Rob
